Eat well, sleep well and exercise…we know these are important, but what about social connection? Strong social connections have a positive effect on our physical and mental health…

• 50% chance of high longevity

• Better quality of life

• Better mental health and well-being

• Happier, healthier and more resilient

Researchers put the effects of social isolation on a par with high blood pressure, smoking, obesity and lack of exercise. The downside is unappealing. I will be doing some ‘social connecting’ in the next few days and the contents of the jars (which may seem irrelevant now) play an important role.

“A deep sense of love and belonging is an irresistible need of all people. We are biologically, cognitively, physically, and spiritually wired to love, to be loved, and to belong. When those needs are not met, we don't function as we were meant to. We break. We fall apart. We numb. We ache. We hurt others. We get sick.” Brene Brown

Next week, in part 2, “the how”, and more about the jars and their contribution to social connection.
